DAF …or…Dissolved Air Flotation
Multiply the images of the most destructive tornado you have ever seen and imagine the force controlled in a tornado-shaped container so products can be fed into it. Frank Polifka, a Kansas farmer, didn't just imagine it, he did it. Over a 15 year period he achieved some remarkable results. Some even seemed to defy some laws of physics, and the "Windhexe" was discovered.

VDT has formed an alliance with Alfa Laval, the worlds largest manufacture of oil/protein recovery technology, to produce machines to process DAF on site while it remains fresh. The machinery used is environmentally friendly, easy to operate and profitable.

The Alfa Laval Three Phase Decanter Principle of Operation:
Unit consists of a screw inside a shell, driven separately by motors at each end. The shell runs at about 4000 RPM, fast enough to reach about 3500G of force, so the heavy solids are spun to the outside, the lighter water develops a layer next, and the lighter oil layers to the inside. The screw runs slightly slower so solids are conveyed to the end.

DAF enters the system on the right end, solids come out as you go from right to left, then water, and then oil.

Poultry Byproduct Processing
Entry System:
Material that enters the system must be handled at standards that are required by the customers that use them. For example, for animal feeds, the product is generally considered inedible and handling methods are less stringent than that of edible markets. The edible systems will have edible byproducts directly fed into the process system and the machinery shall be installed in clean rooms to meet the bacterial quality, USDA and/or FDA regulatory needs.

Grinder-Preheater:
Raw meat products entering the system are emulsified and cooked, in-line on their way to the decanter.

Decanter Module:
The decanter separates the liquid from the solids, sending the solids to the Windhexe and the liquids to the centrifuge module.

Centrifuge Module:
Modules are set up with the basic components and pre-wired and plumbed before shipping to the customers site. The centrifuge module refines the oil and water where the oil quality is of the highest value and quality (considerably higher than current methods allow).Modules are now outfitted with wired panels and plumbed to simplify the piping and provide better accessibility for cleaning and maintenance. The use of the decanter removes fat, and water, so well that the solids volume is minimized to the Windhexe. This makes the Windhexe quite small compared to even the blower system that is used to convey the processed material from the Windhexe to the storage silos. A wet scrubber is all that is required to satisfy environmental regulations.

Evaporator Module:
The evaporator module concentrates the liquid from the centrifuge, making an extremely nutritious and highly flavorful extract. It can either be sold as an extract, or added to the solids entering the Windhexe to create a fortified, and highly flavored powder.

Silos:
Powder handling is done with vacuum conveying to prevent material losses.

Screen Shots
The various processes are monitored and controlled state-of-the-art computer systems to monitor the entire system. Screens are designed to allow the operator to easily understand all facets of the current process and to allow the saving of "recipe's" defining the optimum process for various product going through the system. The operator just indicates which recipe is desired, and starts the system. The parameters can be modified during operation and then the new recipe can be saved for the next run allowing continuing optimization of the process.
